September 12, 2004: TWO VERY IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS: No, I'm not closing down the site. But these are important issues that concern it: ANNOUNCEMENT #1: Recently, during a brief visit to internet sites I have regularly visited for many months (if not years, and which I considered to be very reasonably safe), my computer was badly infested with new breeds of spyware that could not be found by my various adware software because they had both attacked the software to block it from finding updates that would have included them, and because some of the things placed on my computer without my permission were self-replicating and very difficult to root out. It took the use of no less than four different programs and a computer specialist to finally get rid of all the junk that was popping up advertising when I wasn't even using the Internet. Although I know that none of the items on my site are infected, I know that many sites that are hosted through "free" services are supported by advertisers who pay the host, and I suspect that I caught this problem through ads that were not properly monitored for non-benign cookies, browser helper objects (BHOs), and other things that once in your system can give someone else complete access to your computer any time your computer is on, if you have a broadband internet connection. I STRONGLY urge all visitors to regularly check their systems for spyware and viruses, especially if you're using cable modem or DSL, to update your protection programs regularly, and get behind a good reliable firewall (not just the one that comes with Windows). And if you have a site that you get for "free," try to make sure that your visitors aren't paying for it by getting their computers riddled with spyware that they picked up simply because they came to your site and were treated to an ad that had spyware that would attack them via any cookies set by the page. I'm afraid one does get what one pays for far too often, and on the net, "free" can come with a very high price tag. (This site, by the bye, is free to my visitors, even though it isn't free to me; I prefer it that way, and consider the money I spend to maintain the site on a professional hosting service well worth it for me and my guests.)
ANNOUNCEMENT #2: In the process of messing up my computer, I'm afraid that this pernicious software might have also crippled the program I use for designing and posting my website; I can no longer save anything new I add to it. Therefore, I am in the process of switching to a new and better program on a new, uninfected computer (which will hopefully stay that way through near paranoid diligence on my part). Although Dreamweaver came highly recommended to me by a great many people, I'm afraid I'm not very fond of it, and it's going to take time for me to make the shift between the programs. Therefore, it is highly unlikely that there will be any new updates between now and mid-October (a shame, since I recently finished Beren and Uinen, and wanted to post them, and also am progressing on Symphony No. 8 and the revisions of my early symphonnies, which I also want to post in the near future). I would doubtless get this done sooner, if not for the fact that I had a bad fall about a week ago, which made a mess of my left knee, bruised both my hands, and sprained my right wrist. They're getting better, but I'm not taking chances with their healing by pushing to do more than I should. I'm sorry for any disappointment this may cause, but rest assured, I'll be back, and the site will be better than ever. In the meantime, the site will remain up with all downloads available. Enjoy them, and I'll see everyone again ASAP!
