What exists of this story has seen several permutations over the now almost fifteen years since I first began writing it.  In the context of my other RGB stories, it takes place about two years after the last, The Times They Are a-Changing, but it is not a perfect continuity.  Another story on which this one relies -- a barely-begun tale called "This Might Be the Start of Something" -- has less than three pages completed, even though I have copious notes for the entire plot from beginning to end.  The more important aspects of what were to be covered in that story are summarized in the first part of this story, enough to allow someone who has not read it and knows nothing about it to get the gist of what's necessary.  This story does not take into account the latter seasons of the RGB cartoon series on ABC, nor does it follow anything used in Extreme Ghostbusters.  There are two reasons for this:  1). this story was conceived and partially written before the last seasons or EGB aired, and 2). I frankly did not like much of what was done with them, since the plots of the RGB series degenerated badly during the latter seasons (and frequently contradicted itself), and the basic premise of EGB was not at all a logical projection based on the characters we knew (nor were the new characters terribly likeable).  Some people may not care for this story (or what exists of it) because it contradicts some of what they might consider "canon," and also will inevitably result in permanent character development they might not like.  So be it.  I do not believe in letting characters, even in fanfic, "run in place"; to me, if they do not grow and change, they stagnate.

I have no idea why this story stalled.  I know where it's going and where it's headed.  The best I can figure is that it got stuck because at the time I was writing it, the RGB fan community was turning heavily into nothing but angst and slash, of which I quickly grew tired.  I was beginning to feel like an unwanted old dinosaur, and I might have finally given up because I could count on one hand the number of people who cared whether I wrote more in the genre or not.  In revising this story in 1998 (over ten years after it was begun), I made some attempts to try to accommodate the tastes of the current readership, but I was extremely displeased with the results and discarded most of them.  I would rather have no readers than cave in and write what felt completely wrong to me just to satisfy other people.  Unfortunately, in the process, I lost the original version of what existed of the story, which I felt was significantly better and more dramatically gripping.  I may attempt to reconstruct that version if I ever feel moved to finish it.  For now, this is where it's at, and this is where it's staying.

A final note:  The supernatural creatures used in this story are derived from legends and myths of several different groups of Native Americans, which are scattered all over the continent.  I used them in spite of that because I felt that if parts of myths are true, they might be true in ways we do not expect.

If you enjoy what there is of this story, please send feedback -- and I do mean feedback, commentary that might help move things along.  "I like it, write more" is not especially inspiring.  Think of what you might want to hear if you had written it, and then follow your instincts.
