In my first viewings of Return of the Jedi, I tended to be among those who really had very little love for the Ewoks. While I understood Lucas' reasoning that he could no longer use the Wookiees in this role as the unexpected benefactors of the Rebels who helped defeat the Empire because they had grown too technologically sophisticated, I felt that not enough was done with them to make them feel real. They had no names we ever heard, no language we understood, nothing with which we could really connect to them as viable people rather than a collection of cute fuzzies. What changed my mind about this was, of all things, the first year of the animated TV show, The Droids/Ewoks Adventure Hour. Suddenly, they not only had names and a language, they had a thriving society, a cultural background, traditions, personalities, history -- all the things needed to make them real. Many of the episodes were childish and easily forgettable, but those that were done well still remain among some of my favorite parts of the SW universe. Predictably, given that I have a long noted fondness for wise old wizard types, my favorite of the Ewoks was Logray. Since in my version of things, the New Republic established a base on Endor after the fall of Emperor Palpatine, I have used him as a recurring character in a number of stories, most significantly in the novel Happily Never After (in which he and Han begin by hating each others' guts and eventually realize they have much more in common than they had ever expected). Since I did not subscribe to the notion that Leia would naturally be elected President of the New Republic (in fact, often the revolutionaries are not the ones who come into power; by the time a new and stable government is established, people are ready to see new faces take the reins of command, and as we learned in RotJ, Leia was not the head of the Alliance), I had her become the governor of the sector in which Endor was situated; Han was her chief of Security. As my writings progressed and time went by in that universe, she became the governor of the most senior quadrant and Han was appointed Minister of Security for the Republic. This required their departure from Endor to the Republic's capitolworld, which I named Jhantor (remember, this was decided LONG before Lucas had anything to say on the subject). This did not put an end to the friendships they had with people there, and when troubles arise on Endor, they can generally be counted on to do what they can to intervene. This story is about one such trouble, and the unusual way in which it is resolved. I can't say why it ran into a block, because it had been going along quite nicely, up until this point. Again, I think it may have died for lack of interest; most of my other friends had long since given up on SW as an interest, and were involved with other things, so there was virtually no one there to read it. Perhaps this, too, will change someday. |
