Author's Preface

Though the synopsis may make it sound as if this is a "Clara" story, it isn't, not really. But I really hate to give away too much of the plot. By now, even a not-so-observant reader will have noticed my use of the name "Fairy Chasm" in several stories. It comes from the name of a road on the north end of Milwaukee County that has always sounded interesting and intriguing -- until I actually drove down it, and found that it was nothing but a boring street in the middle of a pricey suburban housing development. There ain't anything even remotely related to a chasm anywhere near it, and I had wondered if the street had gotten its name because it was near a ravine along the Milwaukee River, or close to the bluffs of Lake Michigan. No such luck. Great name, but a lousy place, so when I decided to move Doc and his family into someplace where they wouldn't be smack in the middle of everything (and thus apt to carry on the tradition of being considered a nuisance 'cause what he did tended to be rather rackety), I decided to use the name "Fairy Chasm Road," and later gave it a history of being named after a real Fairy Chasm. Whether or not actual fairies will ever have anything to do with the place remains to be seen.
