Original Orchestral Works Composed and Digitally Performed by Mary Jean Holmes

PLEASE DO NOT LINK TO OR STREAM TO OTHER WEBSITES
ANY AUDIO FILES FROM THIS SITE WITHOUT PRIOR PERMISSION.

This is professional work, and though I am allowing visitors to download the music for free for their personal enjoyment, it remains under full copyright, which I intend to protect. Anyone who wishes to perform or broadcast (in any medium) any of my works may contact me via Feedback to negotiate for permission, and availablity of scores.

Recognizing the proliferation of portable media players, in particular the iPod (of which I myself own several), I decided to make the files available in different formats. The low-quality mp3 files are certainly not the best representations of the work, but they are smaller and easier to download for folks with slower modem connections. For the moment, and for those who would like to sample the work before downloading the large high-quality file, I am posting them unzipped, so that they may be easily enjoyed, but if excess bandwidth issues or unauthorized streaming is noted, I will return them to zipped files that can be downloaded and saved, but not played "live."

For the edification of more discriminating users with broadband connections, I am also posting versions in Apple Lossless Compression format (mp4). These can be played on any iPod or with a computer using the free iTunes player (other devices and programs may be capable of playing the format, but as I've not been able to test for compatibility, I can't guarantee it). These files are zipped, to discourage playing them "live," as they are much larger files and might easily consume my bandwidth allowances if played "live" too often (presuming people want to listen to them, of course!). They are high quality, and quite comparable to the wav format in which they were originally recorded. Unfortunately, they are still no more than my sampled orchestra, generated through the "magic" of my home computer; though I have been trying diligently to use all the tools available to me to improve the quality of sound, the balance, etc., they still fall short of what I could wish to present to my audience: a true symphonic sound, and performance. Until the day comes when I find either a willing orchestra or someone with vastly better sound equipment (and the experience to use it well), I will do the best I can. My tinkering with both the arrangements and the instrumentation will no doubt continue as I attempt to improve the sound of what I have written, but there is other music begging to be set free of my imagination, and when the Muse moves me to compose anew, I will always attempt to follow. I hope others will also continue to be sufficiently interested to come along with me on this musical adventure.

The images to the right are the album covers I designed for the CDs I made of my works for family and friends. Those with blue borders surrounding them are currently fully posted; those with yellow borders are partially posted. Those without borders are not posted but are, in fact, complete; they have only been recorded using old MIDI instrumentation, and I can no longer bear to listen to them, knowing that with time and effort, I can rescore them to sound much better. They will be posted as I finish acceptable new recordings of them. From time to time, even the new versions may be replaced with newer improved recordings. Sadly, the desire to endlessly edit one's work extends to music as well as prose.

Also, all of these works have introductions and dedications, as well as descriptive and informational liner notes for individual movements. They will also be posted, as I redesign each of the pages. A word of caution: these notes will appear in pop-up windows. If you have all pop-ups and/or javascript disabled in your web browser, you will not be able to read them. This is a design choice I made to avoid the need for an entire new page to open for what is generally a comparatively small amount of text.
